Houses for sale in Eltham Taranaki

Eltham is a small inland town located in South Taranaki, 50km from New Plymouth and just 20km north of Hawera. Known as a town of industrial firsts, it was initially put on the map when it was made home to New Zealand’s first commercial butter factory. The Jubilee Dairy Factory, also known as the ‘Milky Way’, made and exported New Zealand’s first classic pound of butter in 1887. Today Eltham is more commonly known not only for its strong dairy farming industry but also for its award-winning innovative industry. With dairy farming holding a strong presence, cheese manufacturing, engineering and meatworks are all part of what makes this township a place that brings a range of jobs and opportunities.

Eltham is also known for being the first town in New Zealand to get a tar sealed road in 1906 and the Pease Building, which was built in 1909, was the first building to have a suspended concrete floor and stands on huge legs of solid concrete. The first Rotary cowshed was also designed in Eltham by local Taranaki farmer Merv Hicks.

If you were to drive through the main street of Eltham, you would notice that the buildings that line the streets stand out for their architectural significance. Eleven of the buildings are registered as significant buildings with the NZ Historic Places Trust and many are used for antique shops, village art galleries and cafes. If you are a bargain hunter, visitors are sure to find something to celebrate the history and retro past. Another popular spot to stop in Eltham is the Fonterra cheese bar, you can sample and purchase cheeses at a significantly lower price than in the supermarkets in this unique bar.  In the town where the New Zealand dairy industry went global, it’s no surprise that Eltham has its very own cheese shop!

The residential housing stock in Eltham is made up of approximately 78% residential housing, 3% residential investment housing and 19% lifestyle properties. With a population of 2,423 people and 30.87% of its occupants living in rental accommodation, this is a popular location for investors to purchase rental properties for long term investment gain. The median cost for renting a home in Eltham is $340 per week and the median rental yield is 5.84%.

On the other end of the scale, the cost of purchasing a home in Eltham is somewhat more affordable than other larger townships in Taranaki. With a median listing price for houses at $335,500, buying a home in Eltham is a lot more feasible, especially for first home buyers.
