A Legacy of Agriculture, Preservation & Excellence

Located within the picturesque Cowling Ridge Estate lies a rich tapestry of history, intertwined with the lush foliage of the Ratapihipihi native bush and gentle flow of the Waimea Stream.

Cowling Road is one of Taranaki’s oldest roads, named after the pioneering Cowling family who lived and farmed the area. The family donated the nearby Barrett Domain to the city of New Plymouth, where they had planted two thousand Kauri trees, making it one of the largest stands of Kauri in New Zealand. Read more about the Cowling family here.

William Cowling and family in the garden of their home, Hurdon, New Plymouth.

In 1914, the visionary Gudopp family purchased this pristine parcel of land, recognising its inherent beauty and untapped potential. The family embarked on a journey to transform the once-wild expanse into a thriving sanctuary. Their foresight and dedication were instrumental in the preservation and development of the area. With a deep reverence for nature, Mr. Gudopp Sr. spearheaded efforts to fence off the Ratapihipihi Scenic Reserve, protecting it from encroachment and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Merivale SenatorDuring this time, the renowned Merivale Jersey Stud was established on the property, laying the foundation for a legacy of excellence in cattle breeding. Merivale Senator and Merivale Bromley, two of the stud's most distinguished bulls, were revered by the industry for their superior genetics and remarkable lineage. The legacy of Merivale Senator endures to this day, enshrined in LIC's Hall of Fame as one of the finest bulls of his era and his impressive silhouette is captured in the Cowling Ridge Estate logo.

For over a century, this land was carefully nurtured by a dedicated family, instilling in it a sense of history, heritage, and agricultural excellence. In 2017, after 103 years, the farm passed into new hands, marking the end of an era while ushering in a new chapter in the story of the Cowling Ridge Estate.

Today you have an opportunity to own a piece of this beautiful land and thrive as they have.

What's in the area?

Around the time the Gudopp family purchased Cowling Ridge, it would take half a day by horse and cart to transport the cereal crops they had grown into New Plymouth’s iconic central city Steam Flour Mill (later known as The Mill nightclub). Today, Cowling Ridge is less than 10 minutes from New Plymouth CBD and its world class attractions. And in even closer proximity are the Ratapihipihi Scenic Reserve, Barrett Lagoon, Frankley School and Francis Douglas Memorial College, as well as various cafes, day-cares, supermarkets, hairdressers and retail shopping.
